The only time I ever saw a screech owl in person was on a ski day in Cataloochie at Maggie Valley, NC, when I was a kid. I was loudly smashing through the snow on a trail that I had somehow found myself alone on. I reached a rhododendron thicket and happened to peer in to see a small owl, shyly looking away from me. Ever since I've been mildly obsessed with screech owls.
