If you’ve lived in this area long enough, you know that we’re blessed with these magical (and savage) little beings. For many animals, being born leucistic (white,) or albino, is a death sentence, as it makes them stand out to predators or perhaps even be rejected by their herd/pack. It can also be accompanied by other functional deformities that makes survival difficult. However, white squirrels have somehow thrived around Brevard, NC. Part of this is due to humans preferring them (they have had legal protections since 1986!) feeding them, and creating urban/suburban environments where they can both feed opportunisticly and don’t have many natural predators. They are also more visible to cars and are less likely to get hit. There is also a White Squirrel festival every year in Brevard!
